EDSP 4500 - Providing Effective Health, Medical, and Communication Supports


This course is designed to give intervention specialists exposure to working with children who have disabilities that include significant medical issues and/or Complex Communication Needs (CCN). Students explore the continuum of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) as well as Assistive Technology (AT). This course also supports intervention specialists’ understanding of the medical information necessary to facilitate service delivery to learners receiving services and supports under IDEA, with a focus on symptoms of conditions, causes of disabilities, functional implications, and vocational aspects of disability. Students practice the use of integrated communication, health, and medical supports for individuals with various support needs.

Requisites: Teacher Education Students, Admission into Advanced Standing
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to use basic medical terminology.
  • Students will be able to describe the medical and psychosocial implications of chronic illness and disability.
  • Students will be able to explain attitudinal and environmental barriers that inhibit the inclusion and participation of individuals with medical and health needs.
  • Students will be able to interpret medical reports and decide how to interact with medical support professionals.
  • Students will be able to describe the various augmentative communciations and assistive technologies available on a continuum.
  • Students will be able to consider the implications of AAC/AT support needs in education, vocation, and independent living.
  • Students will be able to explain the barriers to accessing and supporting appropriate AAC and AT and propose solutions for access.
  • Students will be able to match features of AAC and AT to specific student needs.
