NRSE 4112 - Nursing Leadership and Management for System-Based Practice


Students apply clinical judgment and clinical reasoning to the concepts of leadership and management in healthcare delivery systems. Areas of focus include administrative issues in health-related services with an emphasis on developing organizational strategies for effective interaction of nursing, medical, allied health, and administrative staff. Students expand on fundamental concepts of quality and safety, professionalism, interprofessional care, informatics, and systems-based practice.

Requisites: NRSE 3202, 3212, 3222. WARNING No credit if NRSE 4121

  • Students will be able to apply principles of leadership and management to enhance person-centered care and optimize healthcare delivery systems.
  • Students will be able to describe principles of team dynamics and team functioning that contribute to organizational culture and improve healthcare quality.
  • Students will be able to evaluate system effectiveness through examination of performance metrics.
  • Students will be able to describe leadership and mangement skills that contribute to a culture of client, provider, and work environment safety.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate professionalism and effective communication with nursing faculty and staff, clients, families/caregivers, members of the community, and members of the interprofessional team.
  • Students will be able to identify legal and ethical issues facing nurse leaders within healthcare systems.
  • Students will be able to engage in the constructive communication to facilitate conflict management.
  • Students will be able to select information and communication technology to support safe and cost-effective nursing care and documentation in accordance with ethical, legal, professional, and regulatory standards and workplace policies.
  • Students will be able to dicuss the nurse leaders’ role in budget and resource allocation to promote health equity.
  • Students will be able to apply knowledge of systems to work efectively across the continuum of care.
  • Students will be able to compare and contrast methods of human resource management and healthcare finance.
  • Students will be able to apply delegation and prioritization principles of clinical scenarios.
