NRSE 2212 - Foundations of Person-Centered Nursing Care


Students learn the process of clinical judgment and clinical reasoning as it applies to person centered care, principles of quality and safety, professionalism, interprofessional care, informatics, and systems-based practice. Students develop foundational nursing knowledge based on underlying scientific concepts to care for clients safely and effectively. Laboratory and clinical experiences assist students in the development of foundational nursing skills and integration of theory into practice.

Requisites: NRSE 2102, 2112, 2122, and 2132
Credit Hours: 6
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 4.0 lecture, 1.5 laboratory, 2.5 clinical

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to demonstrate, use, and apply foundational knowledge of evidence-based clinical reasoning and clinical judgment to deliver person-centered care to adult clients.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate foundational knowledge of quality improvement strategies in the care of adult clients.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate behaviors that contribute to a culture of client, provider, and work environment safety.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate professionalism and effective communication with nursing faculty and staff, clients, families/caregivers, members of the community, and members of the interprofessional team.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate effective functioning as an interprofessional team member to optimize the health of individuals and families.
  • Students will be able to describe the impact of health disparities and social determinants of health on care outcomes for adults with health alterations.
  • Students will be able to use information and communication technology to deliver safe and cost-effective nursing care and support documentation of care to adult clients.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate the nurse’s legal, ethical, and professional standards of care with regards to the care of the adult client.
  • Students will be able to integrate principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion into the care of adult clients.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate commitment to personal well-being and growth that enables professional practice and leadership.
