NRSE 4222 - Health Economics and Healthcare Policy for Contemporary Nursing Practice


Contemporary issues in healthcare are explored with a focus on the role of the nurse and professional healthcare organizations in policy development, revision, and advocacy. Principles of health economics including financial and payment models and their impact on delivery, access, and quality of care are discussed within an equity and social justice framework. Students participate in critical analysis of healthcare policies, regulatory agencies, and economic constraints that impact professional nursing practice and healthcare delivery systems.

Requisites: NRSE 4102, 4112, 4122, 4132. WARNING: No credit if NRSE 4601

  • Students will be able to incoporate considerations of efficiency, value, and cost into the plan of care for clients and/or communities.
  • Students will be able to describe the process of healthcare policy development and factors that influence policy development.
  • Students will be able to analyze the socioeconomic impact of proposed healthcare policies.
  • Students will be able to reflect on the responsibilities of nurses and professional nursing organizations to act as client/community/population advocates in order to advance health equity for all.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to act as an advocate on behalf of a client, family member/caregiver, community, or population.
  • Students will be able to appraise the impact of policy, economic, and regulatory agencies on health outcomes, workplace safety, and nursing practice.
