NRSE 2222 - Pharmacology for Nursing Practice


Students are introduced to basic concepts and principles related to pharmacology, including the principles of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacotherapeutics. Students develop foundational nursing knowledge based on underlying scientific concepts to administer drug therapy safely and effectively.

Requisites: NRSE 2102, NRSE 2112, NRSE 2122, NRSE 2132. WARNING No Credit if NRSE 2241

Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to discuss the concepts and principles related to pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and pharmacotherapeutics.
  • Students will be able to recognize the major drug classificiations in terms of their mechanism of action, therapeutic use, adverse effects, and contraindications.
  • Students will be able to discuss the role and professional responsibilities of the nurse in relation to drug therapy.
  • Students will be able to utilize clinical reasoning and clinical judgment in the safe implementation of drug therapy.
  • Students will be able to discuss the benefits and risks of alternative and over-the-counter (OTC) drug therapies.
