NRSE 3212 - Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing Care


Students apply clinical judgment and clinical reasoning to the concepts of person-centered care for clients across the lifespan experiencing psychiatric-mental health alterations. Students expand on concepts of quality and safety, professionalism, interprofessional care, informatics, and systems-based practice as they apply to psychiatric-mental health nursing practice. Laboratory and clinical experiences assist students in continued development of skills and integration of theory into practice.

Requisites: NRSE 3102 NRSE 3112 NRSE 3122. WARNING No credit if NRSE 3141.
Credit Hours: 4
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

  • Students will be able to demonstrate evidence-based clinical reasoning and clinical judgment to deliver person-centered care to clients with psychiatric-mental health alterations.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate quality improvement principles in the care of clients with psychiatric-mental health alterations.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate behaviors that contribute to a culture of client, provider, and work environment safety.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate professionalism and effective communication with nursing faculty and staff, clients, families/caregivers, members of the community, and members of the interprofessional team.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate effective functioning as an interprofessional team member to optimize the health of individuals and families.
  • Students will be able to describe the impact of health disparities and social determinants of health on care outcomes for clients with psychiatric-mental health alterations.
  • Students will be able to use information and communication technology to deliver safe and cost-effective nursing care and support documentation of care in accordance with ethical, legal, professional, and regulatory standards and workplace policies.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate the nurse’s legal, ethical, and professional standards of care with regards to care of the client with psychiatric-mental health alterations.
  • Students will be able to integrate principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion into the care of the client with psychiatric-mental health alterations.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate commitment to personal well-being and growth that enables professional practice and leadership.
