BIOS 1700 - Biological Sciences I: Molecules and Cells


Cellular and molecular biology. Designed for science majors and preprofessional students. Introduction to the chemistry of life, cell structure and function, and the principles of inheritance. Credit not allowed for both 1700 and PBIO 1140.

Requisites: C or better in BIOS 1030 or ((ACT 23 or SAT 1130) and Chemistry placement 1510) or (ACT 27 or SAT 1280) or (MATH PL2 and Chemistry placement 1510) and WARNING: No credit for both this course & (always deduct credit for the first course taken): PBIO 1140

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to explain basic biology terminology, concepts, and methods.
  • Students will be able to describe the 3D structure of (biological macro) molecules and their subcellular localization.
  • Students will be able to describe how information stored in DNA is expressed as RNA and proteins.
  • Students will be able to discuss how biochemical pathways usually involve multiple reactions catalyzed by enzymes that lower activation energies.
  • Students will be able to describe how energy captured by primary producers is stored as chemical energy that can be biochemically converted into ATP for use in synthesis, transport, and movement.
  • Students will be able to identify how signal reception by cells may vary with location and time and how signal transduction pathways are crucial in relaying signals so that different cell types express different genes.
  • Students will be able to describe cell structure (shape, membrane, organelles, cytoskeleton, and polarity) and explain how structure affects cell function.
  • Students will be able to describe how mutations, which can be inherited, can affect gene expression and/or the structure and function of the gene product.
  • Students will be able to explain how mutations that change gene regulation and/or protein structure can affect anatomy and physiological function.
  • Students will be able to identify how cells adopt different cell fates depending on their local environment and/or cell lineage.
  • Students will be able to apply scientific methods of inquiry appropriate to gather and analyze data and draw evidence-based conclusions.
  • Students will be able to evaluate evidence-based scientific arguments in a logical fashion and distinguish between scientific and non-scientific evidence and explanations.
  • Students will be able to communicate how scientific findings contribute to the modern world.
