HSLS 1080 - Introduction to Communication Differences and Disorders


Introduction to communication sciences and disorders, including a wide spectrum of impairments and disabilities in hearing, speech, and language for people. Considerations for people from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds are integrated throughout the course.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to describe typical speech, language, and hearing processes.
  • Students will be able to identify speech, language, and hearing disorders and their causes, prevalence, and characteristics.
  • Students will be able to pose and answer thoughtful questions about communication disorders with consideration of various cultural perspectives.
  • Students will be able to reflect upon, discuss, and distinguish ‘disorder’ and ‘difference’ as it relates to speech and language abilities for people with different cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
  • Students will be able to describe their own cultural views and perceptions, as well as those of different cultures, in relation to communication disorders.
  • Students will be able to explain the social, linguistic, cultural barriers that individuals with communication disorders face in striving for full inclusion.
  • Students will be able to identify policies advocating for individuals with communication disorders, including state and federal level policy making and legislation.
  • Students will be able to initiate and develope interactions that are judgment-free with people who have communication disorders and differences.
  • Students will be able to initiate and develop interactions that are judgment-free with people from different cultural backgrounds.
