DANC 2801 - Lighting for Dance


A course in theatrical lighting for dance presented through lecture/demonstrations, hand-outs, hands-on experiences, self exploration outside of class, field trips and laboratory experiences. Explores and provides practical experiences with the following elements of dance lighting: -Tools of Lighting Design: Angle, Intensity, color, movement -Understanding Dances and Choreographers -Cueing a dance -Stage Management of lighting design -Basic moving lights concepts

Requisites: DANC 1801
Credit Hours: 2
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 1.0 lecture, 2.0 laboratory

Learning Outcomes:
  • Communicate in the theatre using proper lighting terminology.
  • Comprehend a light plot and related paperwork and demonstrate its application in the theatre.
  • Demonstrate examples of the tools of lighting design-angle, intensity, color, movement.
  • Light and stage manage a student dance piece for the Senior Capstone concert or other School of Dance event.
  • Observe a dance, develop a basic design concept, and communicate the design concept verbally, as well as practically.
  • Think in terms of Light as it applies to the human form on stage.
