ENG 4820 - Form and Theory of Literary Genres: Poetry


Thorough study of selected issues in the understanding of poetry, exemplified in a range of classic and/or contemporary texts, with attention to their ethical visions.

Requisites: 2 Creative writing courses (ENG 3610 or 3620 or 3630 or 3950 or 3960 or 3970 or 4860 or 4870 or 4880)

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to articulate responses to important literary questions and concerns.
  • Students will be able to engage, from a practitioner’s perspective, in discussion of important literary questions and concerns and apply their perspective on them in their writing.
  • Students will be able to recognize and assess the ethical positions in poetry created by other writers.
  • Students will be able to formulate, evaluate, and refine the ethical positions in their own poetry.
