GEOG 3310 - Geography of Africa
This course will explore the physical and human geographies of the African continent as well as geographic approaches to understanding the ways in which humans interact with their environment. The course will cover many themes in African geography and explore approaches to understanding patterns of social and environmental change. We will go over the broad macro picture of continental patterns in major thematic areas (e.g., the political map, economic patterns, major ecological zones) and also examine issues related to environmental variability and social inequality in the local and regional contexts. Topics covered include, climate change and heritage, pastoralism and climate change adaptation, health and development, wildlife conservation, livelihoods and sustainability, migration and development, international land acquisitions and roots of conflict. Students will also learn how to make effective research presentations.
Requisites: Soph or higher and (GEOG 1100 or GEOG 1200 or GEOG 1310 or GEOG 2400 or INST 1100)

- Students will be able to explore Africa’s history and link it to its current sociopolitical and economic landscape.
- Students will be able to examine livelihoods and challenges to livelihoods.
- Students will be able to explore wildlife conservation efforts through a virtual field trip to East Africa.
- Students will be able to investigate the roots of conflict in selected African countries.
- Students will be able to develop critical reading and writing skills and assess one’s own writing as well as the writing of others.
- Students will be able to use unbiased language to organize and deliver a presentation around a central message supported by relevant and convincing information.
