LING 4921 - TELT Teaching Practicum


This course provides students with supervised opportunities to develop teaching materials and to assist with online instruction for teacher training for international faculty. Students apply practices related to language teaching methods, materials design, and computer assisted language learning. They are also responsible for creating instructional materials and environments used in the practicum. Students have opportunities to focus on a variety of teaching methods and English language skills, including writing for academic purposes, English as a medium of instruction (EMI), pronunciation, and other foci as appropriate.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to design aspects of virtual learning environments.
  • Students will be able to manage aspects of virtual learning environments.
  • Students will be able to draw on multidisciplinary knowledge: psychology, sociology, history, religious studies, cultural anthropology, etc., to understand and monitor international student performance in virtual learning environments.
  • Students will be able to perform assessment in virtual learning environments.
  • Students will be able to adapt and apply what they have learned from previous TELT methodology classes in the preparation of materials to address students’ needs.
  • Students will be able to connect their teaching experiences with their theoretical training in order to provide effective feedback in virtual learning environments.
  • Students will be able to perform a needs assessment and will learn how to conduct an online language class.
  • Students will be able assess their own performance in designing virtual learning environments and their experience as tutors and reflect upon how they could be more effective instructors.
  • Students will be able to use and integrate multiple communicative modalities: written, spoken, audio-visual.
