REC 1030 - Wilderness Survival
Introduces basic knowledge and techniques utilized in wilderness survival situations. Emphasis is placed on avoiding a survival situation but will deal directly with mental and physical needs of the human body when placed in less-than-ideal scenarios in nature. Students can expect to take part in a contrived wilderness survival situation to practice and demonstrate the skills they have gained.

Learning Outcomes:
- Students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in a number of technical survival skills that include creating a debris hut shelter, water and food procurement, and fire-starting techniques.
- Students will be able to identify the psychological issues associated with a wilderness survival situation.
- Students will be able to identify best practices for avoiding a survival situation in a future outdoor excursion.
- Students will be able to apply techniques for purifying water in a survival situation.
- Students will be able to name basic equipment for a personal survival kit.
- Students will be able to prioritize biological needs of the human body in a survival situation.
- Students will be able to connect relevant experience and academic knowledge as they apply the principles of wilderness survival in problem-solving, maintaining and controlling comfort, and remembering to live in the moment.
- Students will be able to demonstrate a sense of self by reflecting on lessons learned through multiple field experiences designed to apply wilderness survival knowledge and skills in a field setting.
- Students will be able to meaningfully communicate learning in appropriate formats and language.
