RSP 2750 - Inclusive Recreation, Physical Activity, and Sport


This course introduces students to the concepts, methods, and settings for developing inclusive recreation, physical activity, and sport experiences for diverse populations through a lens of equity with a particular focus on the intersection of disability. These concepts and methods are applied to individuals and groups that may need adaptations or modifications to participate in various experiences. Students connect knowledge of theory and practice through meaningful recreation experiences in learning labs and/or field settings that culminate with the planning, design, and facilitation of an inclusive community recreation experience in partnership with various community organizations.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to articulate the role that factors such as age, race, ability, gender, sexuality, and socio-economic status have in creating barriers to participation within recreation, physical activity, and sport.
  • Students will be able to describe and analyze the individual, cultural, and contextual factors of identity, bias, values and beliefs as they relate to access to recreation, physical activity, and sport.
  • Students will be able to identify and explain specific legislation and cultural events underlying accessible recreation, physical activity, and sport for diverse populations.
  • Students will be able to apply concepts, ideas, and trends in inclusive recreation, physical activity, and sport settings to help negotiate identified barriers.
  • Students will be able to identify and implement effective verbal and non-verbal communication strategies when interacting across cultures to ensure full participation in inclusive recreation, physical activity, and sport experiences.
  • Students will be able to articulate cultural competency by asking complex questions of guest speakers from diverse identities surrounding access to recreation, physical activity, and sport.
  • Students will be able to synthesize answers to complex cultural questions, derived from diverse individuals, into actionable items as future professionals.
  • Students will be able to initiate dialogue with participants and use visual observation to design and implement effective participant centered modifications for diverse individuals with differing abilities.
  • Students will be able to plan and critique inclusive practices as they apply to area, facility, policy, program, and activity design.
  • Students will use an ongoing process of self-reflection to examine how their personal experiences differ from those of culturally different others, & to identify what can be done to create a greater sense of equity within rec., physical activity & sport.
