SW 4921 - Field Seminar I


First of a two-semester series, taken concurrently with SW 4801 and 4923. Provides an opportunity to integrate field experience with coursework and personal reflection. Process activities, questions, and concerns related to the field practicum through discussion and field journals. Develop analytical, written, and presentation skills through assignments focused on use of self within the context of a social service organization. A variety of practice issues are addressed in a regional context including diversity, social justice, social work values and ethics, self-understanding, and professional development.

Requisites: Sr and Social Work major (BS6605 or BA6601) and SW 4801 and concurrent with (SW 4922 and SW 4924)
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 3.0 seminar

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to critically analyze practice experiences in the implementation of the social work role within a social agency.
  • Students will be able to apply social work values and ethics across the micro-macro spectrum of practice settings.
  • Students will be able to describe relevance of core social work values to social work practice.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate self-awareness by examining one’s personal origins and culture, including values, beliefs, and customs, in relation to family history, race, ethnicity, power, and privilege.
  • Students will be able to describe cultural diversity.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate anti-oppressive social work practice.
  • Students will be able to articulate the basic principles of managing the social worker’s and clients’ safety in the community setting.
  • Students will be able to apply the NASW code of ethics in their work as a professional social worker.
  • Students will be able to critique their performance in a professional setting, identifying strengths, challenges, and strategies to manage those challenges.
