HSLS 1130 - Introduction to the Deaf Community


This course examines the diverse experiences of deaf individuals and the cultural biases that impact language learning, language deprivation, educational approaches, assistive technology, cultural positioning, etc. The course examines deafness from a broad bio-psychosocial perspective.

Requisites: No credit for this course if taken after DSI 1610
Credit Hours: 3

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to explain how cultural biases and norms impact the language learning of deaf individuals.
  • Students will be able to describe the cultural diversity found within the deaf community.
  • Students will be able to initiate and develop interactions and ask questions that demonstrate curiosity and openness to diverse others in relation to the deaf community.
  • Students will be able to interpret the diverse experiences of deaf individuals and act in a supportive manner that recognizes the cultural diversity that impacts the educational decisions of and for deaf individuals.
  • Students will be able to discuss services of/for deaf individuals and how these services are culturally influenced.
  • Students will be able to explain and demonstrate differences in verbal and non-verbal communication of the deaf community.
