WGSS 4940 - Research Experience in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies


Research course in which student engages in independent research and/or collaborates on faculty research activities in WGSS. This may include student development of independent research under faculty supervision; presentation of research at disciplinary conferences; collaboration with faculty on intellectual work such as data collection and analysis, journal editing, or writing; or other approved, directed research activities. Student must discuss the research plan with the faculty member before receiving permission to enroll.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to describe the various ways that feminist scholars may approach research.
  • Students will be able to connect material from their previous academic study in WGSS to the process of independent research and intellectual work in the discipline.
  • Students will be able to apply skills, abilities, theories, or methodologies acquired in their previous WGSS courses to an independent research project.
  • Students will be able to communicate findings from research focused on women, gender, or sexuality clearly using an appropriate format, language, and visual representations.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate a developing sense of self as a learner within the context of feminist research, building on prior experience as they conduct research and communicate research findings.
  • Students will be able to reflexively express how their positionality and subjectivity affected the research process.
  • Students will be able to discuss ethical issues involved in planning, conducting, and communicating research on women, gender and/or sexuality.
