Overview

The Department of Mechanical Engineering grants B.S. degrees in mechanical and energy engineering, a M.S. degree in mechanical engineering, and a Ph.D. degree in mechanical and systems engineering.

A degree in mechanical or energy engineering can lead to careers in many fields: design, patent law, manufacturing, research and development, biomedical engineering, technical consulting, product testing, technical sales, supervision or administration, and higher education. Mechanical and energy engineers work in many industries including automotive, aerospace, power generation, chemical, solar, wind, petroleum, plastics, and metal processing. Within each industry, no career is exactly the same. Automotive engineers, for example, are involved in every aspect of vehicle design. You could be responsible for creating an aerodynamic exterior body design, increasing engine efficiency, ensuring the safety of new air bag designs, or designing and testing a new suspension system.
