Overview
Ohio University’s Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences (HSLS) program offers both outstanding professional and research training through bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Our faculty is dedicated to exploring the science of human speech, hearing and language as well as seeking new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat various communication disorders.
The Department’s undergraduate program in hearing, speech, and language sciences is one of the largest in the United States, and its graduate programs in speech-language pathology and audiology are consistently ranked among the best in the nation. We achieved our reputation through a unique curriculum that combines classroom study, laboratory work and clinical experiences and service-learning opportunities — often in conjunction with students in other disciplines within the college and the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. Our graduates leave with a sound understanding of the anatomical and theoretical underpinnings of our field, as well as many hours of hands-on application in a multidisciplinary setting that closely resembles the modern health care workplace.
*Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences was previously a division in the School of Rehabilitation and Communication Sciences (RCS) within the College of Health Sciences and Professions. Its elevation to department status is anticipated to be approved at the June 2024 Ohio University Board of Trustees meeting.
Special Opportunity
Honors Tutorial College
The Honors Tutorial College program in Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences
offers exceptional students the opportunity to study the many aspects of communication sciences and disorders in one-on-one relationships with faculty members. Maximum opportunities will be afforded for the student to progress well beyond the materials found in conventional courses. The program starts in the spring semester of sophomore year. The program does not admit students entering as freshmen. Students apply for admission in the fall of sophomore year. Students are selected by the director of studies, faculty of the Department of Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences, and the Honors Tutorial College on the basis of superior ability and sustained motivation.
Student Organizations
Creative Expressions
The purpose of this organization is to create and organize activities for typically developing children as well as children with disabilities. The organization aims to provide an inclusive learning experience for students and children.

National Student Speech-Language and Hearing Association (NSSLHA)
NSSLHA is for students majoring in Hearing, Speech and Language Sciences. Activities include speakers, volunteer activities, and social activities.

Ohio University Sign Language Club
The purpose of this club is to bridge the gap between the hearing and deaf worlds by informally educating others on the usage and application of American Sign Language in everyday life.

Student Academy of Audiology (SAA)
The purpose of this club is to assist those interested in the field of audiology and facilitate community awareness through philanthropic, social, and educational events.
