Who do I contact if I have an issue with Reader?
You can email grad.slate.admin@ohio.edu , for all Reader issues, business or technical, and they will be routed to the right individual for quick resolution.
How do I waive an Application Fee?
Application fees may only be waived from the Submitted But Not Paidbin of the Slate reader. You will need to add the application to your queue to gain access to the forms and the select Yes and send to waive the app fee.
What are the types of Slate access available?
Administrative Staff- Performs backend day-to-day tasks and maintenance such as transcript processing or record consolidation. Typically users with this role are housed in the Grad College.
Communications - Design and send templated communications in the system for marketing purposes. This role is typically reserved for University Communications and Marketing, the Grad College, or the centralized OHIO Online recruitment team.
Application Reader- The system in which applications are processed and read
. Users with this type of access either make comments, read applications, or submit recommendations for admission. You will be further prompted to identify the type of Reader access you need.
Recruiter- Perform recruitment functions in the system, such as performing outreach to a student for conversion purposes or to see inquiry -level (non-applicant) record information.
Other- Only to be used in rare cases when an individual needs specific access not listed above.
How do I manage long lists in Application Reader? *(sorting and filtering)
When working inside of the application reader you may notice a filter iconon the far right portion of the screen.
To filter applicants:
- Select the filter icon(shown below). A Customize Viewbox will appear.
- In the drop-down menu at the top of this box, you can select from a variety of pre-defined views.
- These views are configured by the Slate Application Adminstration (SAA) team. If you need a special filter "view" created for your college to help with the review process, you may email the team at: grad.slate.admin@ohio.edu
- Select Update to view applications with this filter.
*Important Note: The filter you select will apply across all of the Reader bins. It is important to switch back to the default "view" when on the homepage to see all the applicants in your various bins.
To switch back to the default view:
- Select the filter icon.
- Select defaultfrom the drop-down menu in the Customize View box.
- Select Update.
What are the tracks and policies surrounding English proficiency?
Graduate College/Council Policy requires that applicants to graduate study who are not U.S. Citizens or Permanent Residents to the U.S., and for whom English is not the native language, must demonstrate English proficiency. English proficiency may be demonstrated through valid scores fulfilling one of the following options:
- Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) - 70 Composite, Writing 17, all other Section Scores of 15
- IELTS – 6.0 Composite, all Bands 6.0
- Paper TOEFL – 525 Total, Composition 4, all other Section Scores 50
Applicants meeting one, or more, of the above conditions are eligible for Unconditional Admission. However, they may not be eligible to receive graduate appointment or fellowship awards. To become eligible for assistantships or fellowships, applicants must meet one of the following:
- Internet-based TOEFL (iBT) - 80 Composite, all Section Scores of 17
- IELTS – 6.5 Composite, all Bands 6.5
- Paper TOEFL – 550 Total, Composition 5, all other Section Scores 52
Track 0: Full admission (without funding)
- Not eligible for a graduate appointment without additional proficiency assessment.
Select this waiver for students whom you do not intend to fund.
- ELIP will assess student for placement upon student's arrival. Not eligible for a TA appointment.
Select this waiver to fund students with a need for OPIE who will not be teaching.
- OPIE will assess student for placement upon arrival. A TA appointment requires demonstration of spoken English proficiency.
Select this waiver to write a provisional TA appointment. The student must still take Versant English Test (VET) to confirm eligibility for instructional duties.
- Not eligible for a TA appointment. No further testing required.
Select this waiver to fund students who a) do not need OPIE, and b) will not be teaching.
- A TA appointment requires a demonstration of spoken English proficiency.
Select this waiver to write a TA appointment. Student must take VET to confirm eligibility for instructional duties.
Note: Eligibility for a Teaching Appointment is based on scores that cannot be waived:
- Fully cleared: iBT - 80 Composite, Speaking score of 24 OR IELTS - Speaking 7.0 OR Paper TOEFL - 550 Total, all sections 52, Composition 5 and VET 70.
- Provisionally cleared with concurrent enrollment in specified OPIE course: iBT - 80 Composite, Speaking score of 21 or IELTS - Speaking 6.5 OR Paper TOEFL and VET combined scores with Paper TOEFL - 550 Total, all sections 52, Composition 5 and VET 59
Why is it taking so long for the record to move bins?
Applications move from bin to bin via a set of rules that run inside of Slate, and they can take up to 10-15 minutes to process. If there is ever an application that you expect to see in a specific bin, and it has been longer than 30 minutes since it was last moved, please contact the Slate Application Administration team at: grad.slate.admin@ohio.edu .
Why is my account inactive?
Every 90 days inactive users are deactivated. If this occurs and you need to reactivate your access, submit the Request/Update user access formabove.
