Accessibility Resource Guide: Digital Signage

Best practices for digital signage content creation

Professional communication centers around inclusiveness. Nowadays, there are numerous ways we can share information, such as websites, social media, and the university events calendar. It's essential that the content on digital signs is accessible through various channels and mediums.

When crafting content for your college or department, it's crucial to ensure that your signage accommodates both accessibility and visual appeal. Incorporating the following best practices in the development and design of your signage content will guarantee effective engagement with your audience.

Font

  • Keep text sufficiently large to be easily readable from a reasonable distance. Remember that not all viewers of your sign will be standing right next to it.
  • Use easy-to-read fonts such as Sans-Serif.
  • Remember that italicized font is more challenging to read at a glance; if you italicize it, keep it to one to two words.

Colors

  • Ensure that the text you use has a strong contrast with the background, making it easily readable for individuals with limited vision. If you want to verify the contrast between your text and the background, refer to  WebAIM's  Color Contrast Checker  as a guide.
  • Choose colors wisely; opt for text and background colors that are highly legible.
  • Avoid using overly vivid palettes, as well as combinations that clash and hinder readability.

Clarity

  • Keep each slide’s message simple and straightforward .
  • Consider communicating only one to two key points of information.
  • Supplement text with clear, simple graphics where necessary to make an instruction or explanation clearer.
