Using Grade Weighting in Canvas

Description

You can weight final grades in Canvas based on assignment groups . Selecting this option assigns a weight to each assignment group, not the assignments themselves. Within each assignment group, a percentage is calculated by dividing the total points a student has earned by the total points possible for all assignments in that group.

Please note: In Canvas, Assignment Groupsare categoriesthat each assignment gets placed under. For example, “Quizzes”, “Discussions”, or “Weekly Reflections”. Please do not confuse this with Group Assignmentsin Blackboard, which are used to create assignments that a group of students will complete as a team.

Solution 

1. Log in to Canvas at   canvas.ohio.edu

2. Navigate to your course via the  Courses tab in the left navigation menu

3. In Course Navigation, select the Assignmentslink

4. Select the Assignments Optionsicon (three-dot menu) and select the Assignment Groups Weightsoption

5. Select the Weight final grade based on assignment groupscheckbox

6. Enter the percentage weights for each of the different Assignment Groups you create. The percentage weights you specify here will determine how Canvas calculates the final grade for your course. These percentages can be changed at any time and students will be notified when any changes are made. The weights will show up in the Gradebook for both students and instructors

7. Select the Savebutton

Additional Notes:

• Assignment group weights can include decimals.

• The total percentage of all assignment groups can be set above or below 100%.

Outcome: You should now be able to weight grades based on assignment groups and see those reflected in the Canvas Gradebook.
