Delaying Quiz Feedback in Canvas

Summary

In Canvas, quiz feedback can be enabled or disabled manually by instructors. Unlike Blackboard, there is no option to enable or disable feedback based on a specific date or specific conditions.

Body

Description

In Blackboard, instructors can delay quiz feedback based on specific dates, or once specific conditions have been met (e.g., all students have submitted a quiz). This is not the case in Canvas. Quiz feedback in Canvas is either enabled or disabled manually; there is no option to enable or disable feedback based on a specific date or specific conditions.

Solution

New Quizzes

By default, New Quizzes do not restrict the student result view after a student has completed a quiz. Students will see all quiz details, including their score and correct or incorrect answers, immediately after completing the quiz. To hide this feedback, the setting to Restrict student result view must be enabled at the quiz level by the instructor. This means the instructor must manually enable the restriction (if desired) while the quiz is open, and manually disable the restriction to show feedback at a chosen time.

Please note that quiz scores will always be visible to the students in the Gradebook regardless of whether you have chosen to restrict the student result view. Quiz scores can only be hidden from students by creating a manual posting policy for that quiz in the Gradebook.

  1. Log in to Canvas at canvas.ohio.edu
  2. Navigate to your course
  3. Locate and open the New Quiz
  4. Select Build in the lower right corner of the page
  5. Select the Settings tab at the top of your screen
  6. Toggle Restrict student result view at the bottom of your screen
  7. Select any feedback items you want to remain visible to students
  8. Select Return at the top right corner of the page

Quiz feedback is now restricted based on your chosen options. To show all feedback to students at a later date, repeat these steps to disable the Restrict student result view option.

Classic Quizzes

By default, a Classic Quiz displays all feedback to a student once they have completed it. Students will see all quiz details, including their score and correct or incorrect answers, immediately after completing the quiz. To show or hide this feedback based on specific dates, the setting to Let Students See Their Quiz Responses must be adjusted at the quiz level by the instructor.

Please note that quiz scores will always be visible to the students regardless of whether you have chosen to disable feedback. Quiz scores can only be hidden from students by creating a manual posting policy for that quiz in the Gradebook.

  1. Log in to Canvas at canvas.ohio.edu
  2. Navigate to your course
  3. Locate and open the Classic Quiz
  4. Select Edit at the top right of the page
  5. Under the Let Students See Their Quiz Responses section, select  Let Students See The Correct Answers and add dates to show and/or hide this feedback.
  6. Select Save  at the bottom of the page

The quiz feedback is now restricted based on dates. To remove the restrictions, remove the dates and save the quiz.

Outcome: You should now be able to show or hide feedback for both New and Classic Quizzes in Canvas.
