You have been directed to this page because your computer's version of Windows 10 is out of date and is no longer receiving basic security updates
Environment
Windows 10
Solution
- Make sure your device is connected to the OHIO network.

Launch Microsoft System Center: Software Center from your Start Menu.

Choose the Updates option on the left, and you should see Feature update to Windows 10. If no update is visible, please contact the IT Service Desk

Select the update and choose Install.

You will be asked to confirm the upgrade. Choose Install Operating System.

The window will show that the update is downloading, then it will switch to "installing." During these two phases, you can continue to use your computer.

After the installer finishes, your computer will prompt you to reboot. Once the reboot begins, your computer will be unusable until it finishes applying the update. Typically, this takes between 1 and 2 hours.
Troubleshooting
If there are no updates showing in Software Center or if all versions are failing to update, then it is likely that you need other update prerequisites that were never installed, or you need to first update to a version that is no longer available.
In these situations, you should first try to manually update using the following method:

Select the Start menu buttonon your Windows 10 device

Select Settings

Select Update & Security
-
Select Windows Update

Select Check for updates
If that still does not work, try using the Update Assistant from Microsoft. This tool can be downloaded from Microsoft's website

Why is this update required?
With older versions of Windows, Microsoft would publish a major release every few years (Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, etc.) with subsequent service packs in between. If you were running one of those versions of Windows, you could keep running it for many years, and Microsoft would continue to provide you with security updates.
When Windows 10 came out in July of 2015, Microsoft changed the way Windows receives updates and upgrades. There are no more major Windows version releases and no more service packs. Instead, Microsoft releases "Feature Packs" about twice a year, and they only support older Feature Packs for a fairly short period of time.
Basically, Microsoft expects you to stay current with Windows 10. In practice, this means that you should plan on doing an upgrade at least once a year to ensure that your computer continues to receive security updates.
