• Why WIPHA?
A forum for women in physics and astronomy at all levels: professors, graduate and undergraduate students. We discuss our unique experiences as women studying and teaching science, in addition to providing a comfortable and friendly environment for those seeking help (that our collective wisdom provides!) on career development, growth and opportunities in our chosen fields.
Who are we? How to join?
Women...faculty, postdocs, graduate students, undergraduate students
in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Women from the department
are added to a mailing list at the beginning of each academic year,
from then they should start receiving information and invitation to
meetings. If you want to be added to the list please contact Dr
Sandler.
We are currently looking for student officers (grad or undergrad) to drive the program of
our group. If you are interested please do contact Prof. Sandler.
If you have ideas or requests for new
activities: contact us.
Here are some ideas
on which a volunteer could help:
Special announcements (workshops,
opportunities, etc.):
- Undergrad: attend the Conference for Undergraduate Women in
Physics (CUWIP). Get ready for the 2023 APS Conferences for
Undergraduate Women in Physics, which will be held at 14
different universities across the United States and Canada! The
conferences will be held in person and onlineon January 20 - 22,
2023, and applications open in just a few days! CUWiP is an
opportunity to experience a professional conference, gain
information about graduate school and professions in physics, and
provide students access to other women in physics of all ages
with whom they can share experiences, advice, and
ideas. Applications openAugust 29. To learn more, visit: this
link
. We have had multiple OU students attend and like
it. The department usually cover your transportation expense
while CUWIP covers your local expenses (hotel and food).

collects stories from women involved with science,
technology, engineering, and math with the goal of publishing a
survival guide for young women in science. Under the Microscope also
publishes news, tips, interviews and profiles.
- Career Wise (ASU): CareerWISE helps women in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs find ways to better manage the challenges in their immediate environments and expand personal skills for thriving in their future career environments. here

Recent Meetings:
The group meets on a regular basis. Usually around lunch provided by
the department (thanks!). The idea is to create opportunity to talk about your
work, find out how to get things done at OU, eat lunch, and just get
to know each other better. Discuss physics, homework, teaching,
research, ... and maybe how that all fits into our lives.
Our meetings are informal: the topics listed below are only an
indication of what we spent some time talking about. - April 8, 2022: At the last meeting of the Spring semester WIPHA hosted Prof. Emerita Natalie Chieffe from the College of Business. (10 participants: 1 faculty member, 2 undergrads, 6 grads, 1 postdoc, 1 visiting professor, 1 external speaker). Prof. Chieffe talked about financial advice for women in general and students in particular. She gave advice on different types of investment strategies and offered to visit again!
- February 25, 2022: We returned to in-person meetings in Clippinger (10 participants: 1 faculty member, 1 undergrad, 5 grads, 1 postdoc, 1 visiting professor, 1 external speaker). We hosted Prof. Michelle O'Malley from the Department of Linguistics at OU. We learned about the impact of cognitive and cultural/gender constructs on speech and language development.
- January 28, 2022: Spring semester began with a zoom meeting again! (10 participants: 2 faculty members, 3 undergrads, and 5 graduates) We discussed potential topics to focus on future meetings among them: financial advice for graduating students, imposter syndrome, networking in the time of COVID, advice for introverts to network, zoom burnout, etc.
