Baker Fund awards nearly $50,000 to five faculty proposals

The John C. Baker Fund awarded $49,253 total to five faculty proposals for research, scholarship and creative work during fall semester 2018.

Endowed in 1961 by a gift of more than $612,000 from 1926 College of Arts and Sciences graduate Edwin L. Kennedy and his wife, Ruth, a 1930 graduate of the College of Education, the John C. Baker Fund was established to support faculty improvement and research efforts. Up to $12,000 is available for each award.

The Baker Fund committee received 13 proposals requesting $133,987 total.

The 2018-19 Fall Baker Fund awardees are:

    Biopsychosocial Outcomes of a Lifestyle Intervention for Individuals with Chronic Pain Post-Intervention and at 1-Year Follow-up Amount Funded: $10,129
  2. Andrew Trachsel, Music

  3. Yanrong Qian, EBI
    Blocking Growth Hormone Receptors to Inhibit Melanoma Progression and Metastasis Amount Funded: $11,999
  4. Mercedes Sotos Prieto, Food and Nutrition Sciences
    The Development of the Healthy Heart Score Mobile Application Amount Funded: $10,250
  5. Sarah Hormozi, Mechanical Engineering
    A Novel Technique to Transition a Substance from a Fluid State to a Solid State Amount Funded: $12,000

The Baker Fund is accepting proposals for its spring cycle through Feb. 14.
