Learning Communities move online for fall 2020

As Ohio University prepares for the start of the academic year with a focus on the health and safety of its students, faculty, and staff, the First-Year and Student Transitions (FYrST) Office remains committed to helping first-year students succeed academically and socially, as well as make a smooth transition to university life. The FYrST Office has announced that Learning Communities will shift to a virtual environment.

“UC 1900 instructors are exploring innovative online teaching resources and strategies to engage students, explore campus resources, and connect to academic college and program expectations and opportunities,” explained Kris Kumfer, director of Learning Community programs.

Learning Community seminar classes (UC 1900) will meet synchronously every week in a virtual format. UC 1900 class days and times are available on student schedules. Students can expect to hear from their UC 1900 instructors before classes start. Students should check their student email accounts during Welcome Week for an invitation from their Learning Community leaders to meet their Learning Communities before the start of classes.

Learning Community Leaders (LCLs) will facilitate out-of-class activities and programming virtually throughout Fall Semester to build community, facilitate student adjustment to Ohio University, and foster learning-based peer networks.

“Everything is going to be a different this year, but the Bobcat family is strong, and we’ll still have an amazing Fall Semester,” said LCL Ellie Burke. “It's going to be so much fun and I’m so excited to see what we can do this year!”

“Even though things may seem a little strange right now as we adjust to new ways of connecting and learning, I can’t wait to meet all the new students in my Learning Community and have an awesome semester,” said LCL Braeden Dang. “We’re all in this together!”

Graduate Assistant and former LCL Miranda Gillilan said, “I met my best friends, connected with faculty in my college, and learned so much more about the University in my Learning Community. It also made my transition to college much easier.”
