Sept. 15 – New Ohio University Information Technology StandardsOne of the top initiatives of the Information Security Governance Committee is the creation of Information Security Standards that serve to guide the University community on how best to secure the technology that accesses, stores, processes, or transmits University data. Two groups of Information Security Standards have been approved through this committee thus far.
This session will include an overview of the committee purpose and composition, the purpose of Information Security Standards, and a high-level overview of each of the newly implemented standards and what each standard means for the OHIO community. It will be presented by Ed Carter, senior manager, Information Security and Technology Accessibility and Alicia Porter, manager, Information Security and Accessibility.
Oct. 20 – Safety and the Internet. What does that have to do with business continuity planning?
As a business continuity coordinator, we address how to cope with an unexpected loss of technology, and the discussion sometimes leads to home networks, computer “hackers” and how to better protect both personal and work data from a nefarious attack. As hard as one might try, one might be unknowingly allowing uninvited “guests” into one’s home (and onto the network) when family members are unaware of good security practices. Brooke Denney, information security analyst, will present on how basic security principals can apply to home and family life. Topics covered in this session will include:
- Things to educate your family about to ensure security and privacy
- What is social engineering?
- What is ransomware?
- Considerations when working from home
- Securing your home computer
- Securing your home network
- Helpful resources
Nov. 16 – Risk Management, it’s everyone’s business.
Larry Wines, director of Enterprise Risk Management and Insurance, will provide an update on enterprise risk management at Ohio University as well as a summary of insurance coverages through the Inter University Council – Risk Management & Insurance Consortium (IUC-RMIC) and an update on the FY22 IUC-RMIC insurance renewal.
