The following message was shared with Ohio University students on the Athens campus on Thursday, Sept. 5, 2024.
Dear Bobcats,
As many of you are aware, both the Athens and University communities are currently processing the unexpected death of one of our students that occurred off campus yesterday evening.
Please know that you are not alone. Each and every one of you has a home here at OHIO, and our entire team stands ready to support you as we collectively process this loss and work to uplift one another in the coming days.
Immediate Processing Support is Available
In the coming days, our Counseling and Psychological Services team is available for on-demand drop-in processing and discussion:
Thursday, Sept. 5
- Living Learning Center, Room 150 until 5 p.m.
- Jefferson Hall Library from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Friday, Sept. 6
- Jefferson Hall Library from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
We also want to encourage you to submit a CARE report to our CARE Team if you are concerned about a friend or a colleague. This team is overseen by our Dean of Students office, and your support helps us ensure we can quickly respond with the appropriate resources to keep all in our community safe.

Continued Support Resources to be Available
Our CPS staff members remain available to help our University community connect to a wide range of on and off-campus support and resources, including 24/7 emergency and crisis services support.
- If you are experiencing acute distress or have an urgent need to speak with a counselor:Please call CPS at 740.593.1616(24/7). During afterhours and on weekends/holidays, press 1 to speak with a counselor.
- Drop-In:During weekdays, please drop-in at Hudson Health Center 3rd floor between 9:45 a.m. and 3:15 p.m.
- Let's Talk Hours:Please drop-in at the Living Learning Center, Room 160 between the hours of 5 p.m. and 10 p.m., Sunday to Friday.
- Crisis Textline: Text “HOME” to 741-741 Free, 24/7 and confidential
