† Students scoring less than 480 on the TOEFL ITP, less than 56 on the IBT, or less than 5.5 on the IELTS, will be given an OPIE English Placement and the OPIE Composition test upon arrival. The purpose of this test is to refine accurate placement in the Full-Time English Program. 

* At University Success (U.S.) Pathway levels, students take a combination of credit-bearing academic classes and English classes. 

  • For TOEFL ITP, Pathway students will also take the OPIE Composition test. Pathway 1 students must achieve a score of 4; Pathway 2 students must achieve a score of 5. Click here for a sample composition topic and OPIE Composition scoring rubric.
  • For TOEFL IBT, University Success (U.S.) Pathway 1 students must achieve section scores of at least 13; University Success (U.S.) Pathway 2 students must achieve section scores of 14.
  • For IELTS, University Success (U.S.) Pathway 1 students must achieve a total score of 5.5; University Success (U.S.) Pathway 2 students must achieve a minimum score of 5.5 in all bands. 

^ OPIE Composition score must be at least 5. TOEFL IBT writing section score must be at least 17. All IELTS bands must be 5.5 or higher.
