M.D./Ph.D. and D.O/Ph.D. dual degree programs are designed for students preparing for a career in medical research. It usually takes about seven to nine years to complete the degrees. A common sequence of study is two years of medical school, three years for Ph.D. research and dissertation, followed by an additional two years of medical school. For information on specific M.D./Ph.D. programs, please view the AAMC Medical School Admission Requirements resource. For information on specific D.O./Ph.D. programs, please view the AACOMAS College Information Book .
Candidates to an M.D./Ph.D. or D.O./Ph.D. program should have outstanding undergraduate records and test scores, as well as substantial research experience. Because the programs require that the applicant be accepted by the graduate school or department as well as the medical school, application frequently entails additional interviews and a strong performance on both the GRE and the MCAT.
The Medical Scientist Training Program is an M.D./Ph.D. funding program provided by National Institute of General Medical Sciences. MSTP grants are awarded to schools, which then select the students and administer the programs. MSTP students receive a stipend and tuition allowance. For a list of institutions receiving MSTP grants, please visit the above NIGMS link.
