Awarded Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from a regionally accredited institution
GPA
Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.00 calculated across all undergraduate transcripts
Clinical/Practicum Experience

Prior to clinical/practicum experiences, students must also provide proof of the following:

  • Specified health status requirements (immunization status, TB screening, etc. as delineated in the current Graduate Nursing Student Handbook)
  • State and Federal background checks free from disqualifying offenses
  • Malpractice insurance
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Required
Licensure
Proof of residence and evidence of valid, unrestricted RN licensure in one of the approved states below
Experience
Evidence of the equivalent of two years of full-time experience working as an RN within the past five years
Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of recommendation:

  • A minimum of two must be from individuals prepared at or above the master's level
  • At least one must be from an APRN or RN

  • Statement of professional goals*
Web-Based Interview
After applications are reviewed, some applicants will be invited to participate in a brief web-based interview with faculty. Be prepared to answer questions about your ideal role in healthcare, your reasons for changing your current position and your plans to succeed in the program.

*Your statement should be an academic essay answering two questions:

  1. Which advanced nursing role do you want to pursue and why? (AG-ACNP, FNP, Nurse Educator, Nurse Leader, PMHNP or other role)
  2. Ultimately, what type of setting, practice and/or population do you wish to focus on?

Please note that this essay is not a creative writing assignment or an appeal to emotion. The essay is your opportunity to tell the Selection Committee your understanding of:

  • Your future nursing career plans
  • Your ideal role and scope of practice
  • Why you are focusing on a particular setting, practice and/or population
  • Why you will be successful in this rigorous online program

Your statement should be in APA 7th Edition style and should be no more than three pages long. Cite the AACN Essentials document and/or APRN Consensus Model where appropriate.

Post-Application Interview

Admission to the MSN program is competitive. Applications are reviewed and some applicants will be invited to participate in a brief web-based interview with faculty. Our graduate nursing programs prepare students for specific roles in health care. Students should be prepared to answer questions about their understanding of that role, their reasons for changing their current role in health care, and their plans to be successful in the program.

International Students

Generally, students that reside outside of the United States are not eligible to enroll in an OHIO Online program. Additionally, Ohio University is unable to provide immigration support to international students regardless of where they reside. If you would like to discuss your specific situation in order to determine eligibility, please reach out to an OHIO Online enrollment counselor before applying.

Transfer Credit

You can transfer up to nine graduate credits toward your online MSN, depending on eligibility. The criteria for credit transfer are:

  • Attach an original (or copy of the original) transcript showing transfer credits.
  • To determine whether a class will transfer to the MSN program, you must submit a syllabus for that class no later than 10 business days before the beginning of the semester.
  • You must have earned the credits no more than five years before the transfer request.
  • Transfer credits must have earned a grade of B or higher.
  • Transfer credits must have been designated as graduate credit at the institution where they were taken, but they must not have been used to confer a degree.
  • Correspondence course credit is not accepted.

Note:For master's degree programs greater than 30 credit hours, no more than 25% of the total graded coursework requirements may be transferred to the degree program (or approximately nine credits).
