Building expertise together
Oboe students have weekly lessons with Dr. Fiala and participate in weekly, small-group reedmaking lessons. Oboe students meet in a weekly studio class and perform in front of their classmates several times per semester.
We also explore topics pertinent to the oboe including oboe adjustment and maintenance, history of the oboe, world oboes, performance psychology and performance health.
Each oboe student has the opportunity to play and perform on English horn. The school owns Loree and Fox English horns for student use.
Reedmaking
Ohio University oboe students participate in weekly reedmaking classes and have access to the reedmaking room whenever Glidden Hall is open. We own the following equipment for student use:
- Oboe gougers by Innoledy, Graf and Gilbert
- English horn gouger by Innoledy
- Oboe and English horn shaper tips and handles
- Wicked Edge sharpening system
- Shapton sharpening system
We start by asking questions, and listening
