Global Health Elective Rotations - HCOM Year 4

Global Health Elective Rotations for Fourth Year Heritage College Students

Spring of the fourth year is the ideal time for OCOM 8911 Elective Global Health Rotations. We suggest that all fourth year rotations be completed by mid-April. Students can start planning for a Global Health Elective rotation in the spring of their third year.  Rotations include clinical or research and didactic elements.  Students are expected to complete research as appropriate on the ethics and other elements related to working in low resource areas, the culture, health and safety issues at their selected location and sustainable development prior to travel. To receive credit students must complete the application process and work with their clinical site Academic Program Administrator (APA) to schedule the rotation and make sure that preceptor and education/affiliation agreements are in place.  Locations not listed on this page will need to be vetted by the Global Health Initiative office.  Students must be in good academic and judicial standing to participate.  Students participating in Global Health Elective rotations receive credit for OCOM 8911 and cannot substitute for a required rotation.  

Note: 

Rotations are planned 6-12 months in advance.  Applications for spring semester must be submitted by October 1 of the previous yearor risk not being approved. Students are responsible for securing a rotation site from the list of vetted sites prior to starting the approval process. Students may identify other program sites, but will need to plan early to complete additional steps.   This includes vetting of the site by the Global Health Initiative and working with their APA to ensure that an appropriate preceptor is identified and that an affiliation/education agreement is in place.  Student selected sites will not be approved if the appropriate documents are not in place. Note also, that sites with level 3 or above State Department advisories will need to go through an additional risk review process and may not be approved.

June – October prior to spring of travel

1. Complete the supplemental application.   This is a Qualtrics form that will help you prepare for the academic requirements and Health and Safety issues. Please complete in as much detail as possible, including ethics considerations and the setting of measurable goals and a plan to achieve those goals through the rotation. Note:  Applications for Spring 2024 are closed.This application is for Fall 2024 to Spring 2025.
2. Complete the on-line application by logging in, and selecting "OHIO Credit Program" at  https://ohiouniversityglobal.force.com/ogo/  (Office of Global Opportunities Student Portal). After logging and selecting OHIO Credit Programs, then select the program name:  Various: Global Health Elective Rotation {Year of Travel}.) Note: You will need to upload the supplemental application, a Letter of Good Standing from your Clinical Education Office, and a professional reference letter. The Letter of Good Standing confirms that you have permission to include the program in your schedule and are in good academic standing.

Post Application

1. Once your application is approved you will receive a nomination e-mail that will instruct you on “accepting” or “declining” your nomination in the application system.  Once you accept your nomination, new tabs will open in the application to allow you to upload documents.  
2. Obtain a visa, if appropriate for the country of travel. Country specific information on visas is available at the U.S. Dept. of State website at http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/travel_1744.html. Non-US citizens can check at http://www.ohio.edu/educationabroad/students/intlstudents.html.
3. Confirm your application by completing all remaining tabs in the application system by returning to: https://ohiouniversityglobal.force.com/ogo/ .  This will include instructions on registering your trip with the U.S. Dept. of State, confirming health insurance and uploading your passport and travel documents among other requirements.  When registering with the Department of State, include the Office of Global Opportunities as a contact under the Traveler Information section in the comments box:  In case of emergency, also contact: The Ohio University Office of Global Opportunities (OGO), (740-593-4583), global.opportunities@ohio.edu .   
4. Upload a completed Personal Emergency Plan to the application system as part of the application confirmation process.  The plan should address the health and safety issues you researched for Question 15 of the supplemental application. 
5. Obtain immunizations as recommended by CDC guidelines ( http://www.cdc.gov) and your health care provider and upload documentation in the application system. 
6. All rotation participants are provided with international health insurance at no cost through. This includes medical evacuation to the nearest appropriate facility and repatriation of remains through. Insurance can be extended beyond the rotation dates (for a total of 21 days) by completing the information under “Health Insurance Enrollment” in the application system. 
7. Review the health and safety information at:  https://www.ohio.edu/goglobal/resources/health-safety . Complete and upload the Personal Emergency Plan Template in the application system. 
8. OGO also asks that you register your travel at:  https://www.ohio.edu/goglobal/resources/health- safety/mytrips .
9. All rotating students pay a $150 Independent Rotation fee. This fee supports administrative costs, the purchase of HIV/AIDS Kits and the Global Health Travel Award. The fee is applied to your OHIO student account the semester in which you are travelling.  You are responsible for checking your account and paying the fee by the due date to avoid paying late fees.
10. Inquire with program or preceptor at your rotation site about access to an HIV/AIDS kit. Let globalhealth@ohio.edu know if they don’t have them and we will try to provide one to take with you. We cannot guarantee the availability of these kits. 
11. Follow the academic requirements as outlined in eMedley.
12. Students participating in a research rotation or any research while abroad must work with the CORE Research Office to complete all pre-trip requirements, including Ohio University and local IRB approval.

14. Submit the results of a TB test taken 10 weeks post return to the US. The TB test is required due to high levels of MDR TB and XDR TB in many low and middle income countries.
