Live streams of OHIO’s Homecoming Parade to include 360-degree video

The largest and one of the most spirited events of Ohio University’s Homecoming Week – the annual Homecoming Parade – kicks off at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7. Bobcats unable to attend this community celebration can still watch the festivities live – either through a multi-camera video stream or, for the first time ever, through an immersive 360-degree video stream.

This year’s Homecoming Parade will feature spirited floats, banners and displays all celebrating the theme “Back in the Mix, Back on the Bricks” in honor of the School of Music’s 100th anniversary and the Marching 110’s 50th anniversary and paying tribute to the musical memories every Bobcat makes while at OHIO.

As in years in past, WOUB Public Media will be live streaming from the parade at woub.org/now . This year, however, WOUB’s coverage will offer two concurrent web streams – a multi-camera live stream  shot from various locations along the parade route, and a 360-degree immersive live stream  shot from the corner of College and Union Streets in downtown Athens.

The 360-degree immersive live stream, which will be accessible by mobile media, is the result of a partnership between WOUB and Ohio University’s Immersive Media Initiative, part of the Scripps College of Communication. Footage shot using 360-degree technology allows viewers to feel as though they are physically in the location being filmed; they can see everything at that location – all 360 degrees of sight – and hear the sounds as though they are actually there.

This year’s Homecoming Parade route will be the same as last year, beginning at the intersection of Union and Factory Streets before traveling up Union Street and making a right turn onto South Congress Street. From there, the route will:

  • Turn left onto President Street
  • Turn left onto Court Street
  • Turn right onto Washington Street
  • Turn right onto College Street
  • Turn left onto Union Street
  • Turn right onto University Terrace

The parade, hosted by the University’s Campus Involvement Center, will end at Ohio University’s Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.

The Homecoming Parade Grandstands, where floats and banners will be judged, will be located at OHIO’s Schoonover Center of Communication at Union and College Streets.
