President Nellis addresses updates regarding Federal Tax Reform

Ohio University President M. Duane Nellis sent the following message to OHIO students, faculty and staff on Monday, Nov. 13, 2017.

Dear Ohio University Community:

I have been closely following the Federal Tax Reform debate, which in its current form will fundamentally make access to a college education more expensive for students and their families. It also would reduce our ability to provide quality education for economically disadvantaged students. Finally, the reforms contain changes that are financially detrimental to University employees. I am writing to update you on measures I have taken to ensure our voices are heard by legislators and policymakers as they continue to deliberate on tax code changes.

I have shared my concerns directly with Representatives Tiberi and Renacci, who are Ohio delegation members on the House Ways and Means Committee, urging them to reject these detrimental provisions. I have written a second letter, which will be sent today to all members of Ohio’s Congressional delegation.

In joining with our peers from Ohio’s public institutions of higher education through the Inter-University Council, we are co-signing a letter to implore our Congressional leadership to reconsider detrimental provisions in the proposed legislation.

My focus is to remain fully engaged in protecting the ability for Ohioans to continue to have access to quality higher education options. I will continue to monitor the progress of these proposed tax code changes, and I also encourage you to review details of the proposed changes to the federal tax structure . I will continue to advocate for Ohio University’s students and our University community.

Sincerely,
M. Duane Nellis
President
