Registration deadline for Spotlight on Learning Conference extended to April 20

Registration for the 2018 Spotlight on Learning Conference is now open. This event will take place on Thursday, May 3, from 9:00 a.m.–3:15 p.m. in Baker University Center on the Athens Campus. Several concurrent sessions this year will focus on the theme “Teaching in Challenging Times.” All OHIO faculty, teaching assistants, and administrators are invited to attend. To register, visit the conference web page by April 20.

This year’s conference will begin with a panel discussion from 9:00–10:00 a.m. about facilitating challenging dialogues and situations in the classroom. Subsequent sessions include topics such as navigating controversial topics with students in the classroom, utilizing academic technologies to create an inclusive environment, and increasing student engagement and classroom transparency.

“These events are truly inspiring, both to learn more about the outstanding teaching at Ohio University, and to share ideas and strategies for our own teaching and learning practice,” said Laurie Hatch, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of sociology. “The theme this year on creating inclusive environments is especially relevant, and I am excited about the planned sessions.”

In addition to the session blocks this year, there are two ongoing opportunities during the conference. Members of the Top Hat team will be available all day to provide faculty with group workshops and one-on-one consultations about adopting Open Educational Resources to their courses. Institutional representatives who attended the recent Academic Quality Improvement Program (AQIP) Strategy Forum also will be displaying the materials they produced prior to and during the forum. Read more about these opportunities on the conference web page .

“I am excited to see the interest in this year’s Spotlight on Learning Conference,” said Candi Morris, senior director of instructional design and strategic program initiatives in the Office of Instructional Innovation. “We received numerous faculty proposals for presentations and we have great diversity in this year’s session offerings. This year’s opening session will feature a moderated faculty panel discussing strategies for managing difficult classroom conversations. The different perspectives of these faculty should provide a very engaging discussion!”
