Approximately 900 students are expected to participate in the Fall Commencement ceremony Saturday, Dec. 11 at Ohio University’s Convocation Center.
The combined undergraduate and graduate ceremony will take place at 2 p.m.
Dr. David Nguyen, associate professor of higher education and student affairs in the Patton College of Education, will be the keynote speaker.
Nguyen is interim associate dean for research and graduate studies in the college and the provost’s faculty fellow for student success. A faculty member at OHIO since 2016, Nguyen as produced more than 60 publications and presentations focused on how campus ecology contributes to student success. His work calls attention to how individuals and organizational features hinder or widen equitable opportunities for students holding minoritized identities. He has received the Patton College’s Distinguished Mentoring and Faculty Research awards based on student nominations.
Degrees will be conferred in the following order during Fall Commencement 2021:
- Candidates for Doctoral Degrees
- Candidates for Master’s Degrees
- Candidates for Bachelor’s and Associate Degrees
There will be a recessional for this event. Once the name of a graduate has been called at the stage, they should return to their seat. After all degrees have been conferred, the 2021 Fall Commencement will stand adjourned.

WHAT: Ohio University graduate and undergraduate Fall Commencement ceremony
WHEN: Saturday, Dec. 11 at 2 p.m.; doors will open at approximately 12:30 p.m. Tickets are not required, and the ceremony is expected to last approximately 2.5 hours. Guests may enter through the main doors off Richland Avenue.
WHERE: Convocation Center, Richland Avenue, Athens. Media representatives are asked to enter on the west side (pass gate entrance) of the Convocation Center where they can check in at the media table to receive press passes and instructions.
Parking for Fall Commencement is available in any regular non-metered, non-restricted space within a dark green or purple lot on campus. A map detailing these parking lots is available here . Additional parking information can be found here .
A designated drop-off zone is accessible via West Green Drive to accommodate loading and unloading needs for those with disabilities. Disability parking is located in Lots 127 and 128 at the Convocation Center. A state-issued disability placard or license plate is required for long term parking.
Please pay close attention to campus signage and event staff who will be on site prior to commencement to provide assistance and direction. Members of the Ohio University Police Department will also be on site to assist with parking.
COVID precautions : All graduates, guests and staff are required to wear a face covering at all times while inside the Convocation Center. Clear face shields alone will not be permissible. Each graduate is allowed up to six guests per graduate, and all guests are encouraged to social distance from parties not in their household.
ADDITIONAL: Note to the media: Press passes must be obtained from the University Communications and Marketing representative at the media check-in table located at the west side (pass gate) entrance of the Convocation Center.
Photographers and videographers are permitted to move to the front of the stage for one minute of filming when speakers take the podium.
Members of the media covering the Commencement exercise are asked to wear traditional, ceremonial gowns. These gowns will be provided by OHIO’s Event Services and are sized according to height.
