Ohio University celebrated exceptional faculty members during the Faculty Teaching and Research Awards Recognition Ceremony on March 29.
During the ceremony, award winners were recognized in a wide range of categories.
“Regardless of their spheres of interests, all of tonight’s award finalists and winners have something essential in common, they are devoted to excellence in what they do and do their best to serve our University community,” said Katie Hartman, associate provost for faculty development. “My thanks to all faculty for their tireless efforts and commitment to Ohio University.”

OHIO’s Top 5 Faculty Newsmakers for the most media placements in 2020 were Professor of History Katherine Jellison, Associate Professor of Sports Management David Ridpath, Associate Professor of Health Policy Daniel Skinner, Professor of Anatomical Sciences Patrick O’Connor, and Associate Professor and Heritage Faculty Endowed Fellowship in Behavioral Diabetes Elizabeth Beverly. The 2020-21 Presidential Research Scholars could not be honored in person in 2021, so they were recognized at this event. The winners are (from left to right) Shiyong Wu, who is a professor of chemistry and biochemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences, Susan Williams, professor of anatomy and the Associate Dean of the Faculty in the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Devika Chawla, professor of communication studies in the Scripps College of Communication. The winner of the 2022 MAC Outstanding Faculty Award for Student Success is Frances Wymbs, assistant professor of primary care in the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. Wymbs was recognized for her commitment to student success, inclusion, and appreciation of MAC core values, for mentoring and teaching undergraduate, graduate, and medical students how to deliver evidence-based treatments, and for conducting clinical research for youth with social, emotional, and behavioral problems. The Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching recognizes excellence in teaching and meritorious academic pursuits both inside and outside the classroom, as acknowledged by peers and students. Award winners from both 2020 and 2022 were honored this year. The 2020 Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching was awarded to Associate Professor of Instruction of Chemistry and Director of B.S. Forensic Chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences Rebecca Barlag. Barlag was recognized for being an exemplary teacher and for consistently demonstrating a deep commitment to student success. The winner of the 2022 Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching is Associate Professor of Instruction Tom Marchese, who is also the director of the Professional Master of Business Administration program and associate director of the Honors Program in the College of Business. Marchese was recognized for his exceptional commitment to student engagement by incorporating real-world examples into the classroom, emphasizing experiential and applied learning practices, and mentoring students inside and outside the classroom. The University Professor Award recognizes outstanding teaching at Ohio University. Undergraduate students bestow the honor of University Professor on four tenure-track faculty each year. Winners of the award then have the freedom to develop and teach a course of their choosing during the following year. The winners of the 2022 Presidential Teacher Award are (from left to right) Ralph and Luci Schey Professor of Sales and Executive Director of the Ralph and Luci Schey Sales Center Adam Rapp and Professor and Chair, Music Therapy in the School of Music, and the Director of Arts in Health in the College of Fine Arts Kamile Geist. Geist was recognized for providing a safe and inclusive learning environment for presenting learning concepts accessible to multiple learning styles, and for engaging with students inside and outside the classroom. Rapp was recognized for incorporating applied learning in the classroom experience for emphasizing hands-on, experiential learning and for fostering a supportive learning climate for all students.
