College of Business students meet with business leaders, network with alumni in Detroit

In honor of Black History Month, the Ohio University College of Business sponsored a student networking and cultural exploration trip to Detroit, Michigan.

Participating students spent two days meeting with leaders from nationally recognized businesses and learning about their commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. The students also enjoyed exploring the cultural history of Detroit and building community with their OHIO peers.

On Thursday, Feb. 2, the OHIO students began their Detroit experience by exploring local art and culture at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. They concluded the day by networking with local OHIO alumni over dinner.

On Friday, Feb. 3, the students met with business leaders, toured facilitates and learned about company culture. Through the support of OHIO’s strong alumni base, students visited with leaders and executives from Rocket Companies, Barton-Malow, and The JRT Advertising Agency. That evening, the students further explored art and culture at the Detroit Institute of Art. Friday concluded with dinner and dialogue featuring two local Black women business owners in the cannabis industry. Students discussed racial/gender inequity in business and minority entrepreneurship.

Saturday's activities focused on engaging meaningfully with Black history and culture. The day started with a visit to the Wright Museum of African American History, where students walked through Black Americans' history, struggle, pain, triumphs, and joys. Students then visited a Black History Cultural Celebration where they met with, learned about, and supported local Black-owned businesses. Saturday evening, the students attended an HBCU-themed Detroit Pistons game that celebrated the legacy and impact of Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

The trip was designed and organized by Dr. Russell Morrow , assistant dean for diversity, equity and inclusion in the College of Business. Dr. Morrow was joined on the trip by 18 business students representing a wide array of majors, minors, and certificate programs. Dr. Melissa Kulp, assistant dean for career and student success, and Dr. Amy Taylor-Bianco, professor of management, also assisted with the trip.
