After months of planning and collaborating with students, Ohio University Eastern’s new Esports Center is complete, with a grand opening planned for March 7, 2023, at 3:30 p.m.
“We are always looking for ways to bring students together that reflect the current student culture and interests,” said David Rohall, OHIO Eastern Dean of Campus and Community Relations. “Esports is unique from other student activities because it provides a venue for students who are passionate about gaming the opportunity to interact and network with other students across all Ohio University campuses.”
The OHIO Eastern Esports Center is a competition space dedicated to the growing industry of esports, allowing for students to play, learn and compete in an environment that fosters opportunities for student engagement across all Ohio University campus locations.
" It is an exciting opportunity for our students at Eastern to channel their personal passion for games into their academic and co-curricular experience ,” Jeff Kuhn, Ph.D., director of OHIO’s esports program said. “This new esports center gives them a chance to build their own esports identity while also strengthening OHIO Esports as a whole. What makes esports unique is that we're not location-bound, so although we have six campuses, we can all play on the same team: OHIO Esports".
Nearly 750 students make up the Ohio University esports student club , with over 1,300 students, faculty, staff, prospective students, and alumni in the Discord channel.
