Ohio University President Hugh Sherman shared the following message with members of the University community on Thursday, June 29, 2023:
As you may be aware, today the U.S. Supreme Court ruled on two cases with impacts for higher education. In the cases, Students for Fair Admissions, Inc., challenged the consideration of race in admission practices at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina.
The court ruled that the admissions programs at both institutions, “violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.”
As we begin to analyze these opinions, the Division of Enrollment Management and Office of Legal Affairs will be working closely with academic leaders to fully understand any potential implications across the University. Our teams also will seek guidance from national organizations such as the National Association for College Admission Counseling, the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities and the National Association of College and University Attorneys. These organizations are working to provide timely and fulsome analyses, which will help to ensure that we are well aligned with other colleges and universities as we move forward. We will share further guidance as it is developed with the University community.
Ohio University continues to be committed to ensuring access to higher education for students from all backgrounds and delivering the support and experiences necessary for students to meet their full potential. This work is core to our mission as a public university and is vital to meeting our state’s need for career-prepared graduates. We are and will continue to be a University that celebrates the contributions of every member of our University community and works hard to ensure that every student can achieve academic success.
