Patrick Kelley, a graduate of the third cohort of the Emerging Leaders program in the College of Business, has been awarded the inaugural 2024 Emerging Leaders Alumni of the Year Award.
Kelley’s journey is a testament to his commitment to excellence, leadership and community, making him a true embodiment of what it means to be a Bobcat.
After graduating Magna Cum Laude in 2019 with a degree in marketing and a sales certificate from the College of Business , Kelley’s academic achievements were just the beginning. His time at Ohio University wasn’t solely about classroom success—Kelley actively sought out opportunities to lead, mentor, and serve others.
Kelley joined the Emerging Leaders (EL) program his junior year, driven by “a genuine interest in growing his leadership capabilities and skill sets.” His commitment to leadership development wasn’t just personal but about contributing to something greater.
After forming deep connections with fellow Emerging Leaders, Kelley and several peers chose to serve as peer mentors during their senior year, fully embracing the chance to support and inspire the next cohort of Emerging Leaders.
Reflecting on his time in the program, Kelley shared how the lessons learned in EL extended far beyond campus. The focus on emotional intelligence, soft skills, and authentic leadership has shaped him as a professional and an individual committed to uplifting those around him.
“EL didn’t just make me a better leader—it made me a better person and community member,” Kelley said. “The framework it provided opened doors for internships, a full-time career, and, ultimately, helped me succeed in life.”
Patrick Kelley reflects on what the award means to him.
A key element of Kelley’s growth came from interactions with alumni deeply invested in the program.
“Engaging with so many phenomenal Bobcat alumni gave me the confidence and encouragement to believe in what’s possible—for my career and for making a difference in the community,” he explained.
After graduating from Ohio University, Kelley couldn’t bear to part with the Bobcat community that had given him so much. Today, he serves as the president of the College of Business Society of Alumni and Friends , determined to provide current students with the same support and guidance he received. His journey from scholarship recipient to society president speaks to his relentless dedication to becoming the leader he aspired to be.
“I drove away from OU (kicking and screaming) with a self-defined understanding, and really—a commitment to myself,” Kelley said. “That’s just what Bobcats do. They return to campus and help develop future generations in any way possible. So, that’s just what I’ve done.”
Kelley’s impact doesn’t end there. In addition to being president of the Society of Alumni and Friends, he serves as vice chair and student mentor on the Ralph and Luci Schey Sales Centre Executive Board, guiding the next generation of sales professionals with the same enthusiasm and passion he’s shown throughout his career.
Kelley’s heart for service extends into the broader community outside of Ohio University. As a dedicated YP board member and Big for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Cincinnati , Kelley is making a profound difference in the life of a young boy in the program.
“We clicked from the start,” he shared. “It’s been amazing to watch him grow, and I can assure you—he’s not the only one benefiting from the experience!”
Kelley is an Industry Segment Manager for Hydro PSG in Cincinnati, where he’s earned a reputation as a forward-thinking professional known for his integrity and compassion.
Kelley was the perfect choice for this year’s award. His selflessness, unwavering dedication to his alma mater, and commitment to serving others represent the very essence of what it means to be a Business Bobcat. He exemplifies the spirit of leadership and community engagement.
Upon receiving the award, Kelley expressed his deep gratitude to the Walter Center for Strategic Leadership and the program's role in shaping his career. His words of appreciation speak volumes about the impact that leadership and mentorship can have on one’s life—and how he’s dedicated himself to paying it forward.
