The Ohio University Athletics-Sustainability Working Group, a group of representatives from Campus Recycling and Zero Waste , the Office of Sustainability , the Appalachia Ohio Zero Waste Initiative , the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service , and OHIO Athletics , is continuing to advance sustainability on campus through the Green Games initiative they started two years ago.
Following Volleyball, Soccer and Field Hockey Green Games in October, the Athletics Sustainability Working Group has selected Wednesday, Nov. 13, as the date for the Fall 2024 Football Green Game. The matchup against Eastern Michigan University will take place at Peden Stadium with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
Prior to and during the game, the Office of Sustainability and Campus Recycling and Zero-Waste will be tabling alongside the Climate and Sustainability Ambassadors with sustainability-education activities and promotional materials delineating ways in which fans can get involved with sustainability at Ohio University through various clubs, programs, organizations, and courses.
Additionally, waste diversion and proper disposal of gameday items into true trash, recycling and compost bins will be emphasized throughout the game and as fans leave. This game will also serve as an effort on behalf of OHIO Athletics to participate in the national GameDay Recycling Challenge, which is part of Campus Race to Zero Waste, an organization that encourages colleges to reduce their waste through various competitions.
Each year, universities and colleges across Canada and the U.S. compete in the GameDay Football Challenge, a recycling and waste reduction competition designed to minimize waste diversion efforts during a designated football game.
“Players for the Planet” will also be highlighted at the games as they are student-athletes that care about the environment. The first “Player for the Planet” highlight of the year goes to Lexi Grissett, a freshman on the OHIO Volleyball team.
