As part of the Network Upgrade Project , OIT crews recently finished upgrading network equipment in approximately 350 closets in 120 buildings across the Athens campus. This work was completed 2 months ahead of schedule. Previously, these IT closets had 110 blocks installed, an aging technology. The 110 blocks have been replaced by fresh patch panels, used to terminate voice and data cabling. Patch panels make it easier and faster to connect end-user devices to the wired network and support a minimum of Gigabit Ethernet network transmission speeds. Users should notice tangible benefits from this work, including faster internet speeds.
