Ohio University’s Innovation Center supported 269 jobs that generated an estimated $23 million in employee compensation in Athens County in 2020, according to a new economic impact report.

EDA Grants the IC a $1.2 million CARES Act Recovery Grant
The Economic Development Administration (EDA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce granted the Innovation Center $1.2 million in funding from the CARES Recovery Act. This grant will be used to provide technical assistance to biotechnology entrepreneurs and modify lab spaces at the IC. This grant will be matched with $304,225 in local funding.
Innovation Center Receives $350,000 Federal Grant
The Innovation Center has secured $350k in federal grants from the Appalachian Regional Commission and the U.S. Department of Agriculture to provide critical business support to biotechnology startups. Specifically, the grants will be used to help fund the ongoing construction of 3 new biotech labs and to give business support and technical assistance to clients.

Strauss discussed the reasons why Ohio is becoming so appealing to young professionals. She also shared her insight on what new hires are looking for in a company and how expectations have changed during the pandemic.
IC Client, OsteoDX, Secures an Investment from TechGROWTH Ohio
OsteoDX, Inc. secured an investment from the TechGROWTH Ohio Fund. This investment will help the team at OsteoDX prepare for the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II Funding application. They were selected for this investment because their promising technology presents a tremendous market opportunity for accurately assessing bone strength.
OHIO Innovation Center: Incubating Appalachia's Biotech Startups
The IC was recently highlighted by the Appalachian Regional Commission for our work over the past year. With funding from ARC and the Economic Development Administration, the IC was able to build three new biotechnology laboratories. These labs are expected to create 100 new jobs and aid in the creation of 10 new businesses over the next three years.
IC Graduate, Jersey Watch, Acquired by Mayhem Sports
IC graduate Jersey Watch is a sports league management software that helps youth sports programs create and maintain websites for their leagues. They were acquired by Greg LaLonde through his new company Mayhem Sports. LaLonde believes that Jersey Watch is well-positioned to take advantage of the recent push towards digitalization due to the pandemic.
