Occupational Health and Safety Program (OHSP)

Purpose & Scope-Each institution must establish and maintain an occupational health and safety program as an essential part of the overall Program of Animal Care and Use. All investigators engaged in animal use must enroll in the OHSP before beginning work.

  • How do I enroll? - Each investigator must complete the online REDcap form linked here: https://redcap.ohio.edu/redcap/surveys/?s=YY3TC9M7TF7MEAAP

NOTE: the REDcap IACUC Occupational Health form will be automatically sent to the Environmental Health and Safety Department for processing. PDF copies of the previous form will no longer be accepted.

  • What does the process entail? - OHSP enrollment begins with a preliminary review of your IACUC Occupational Health form by a representative in the Environmental Health and Safety Department. After EHS review, you are enrolled in the occupational health and safety program.

    • A second review of the form will be conducted by an OHIO medical professional. You can choose to speak with the medical professional.  The medical professional may choose to speak with you.
    • If EHS staff or the OHIO medical professional have concerns, they  may refer you to Ohio Health for further consultation.

  • When can I begin working with animals? - Once the IACUC protocol for which you are listed as study personnel receives approval or the personnel amendment to add you to the study has been approved by the IACUC, the PI of the study will receive notification of approval. At that point you can begin to work with animals.
