Review: Color I

  1. The Spectrum
    • What are the wavelengths of visible light?
    • How do we describe light with wavelengths shorter (or longer) than visible light?
    • What is the color ordering in the visible spectrum?
  2. Dispersion
    • What is the relation between the index of refraction and the speed of light?
    • Blue light has a higher frequency than red light. Since it oscillates faster, it is more likely to scatter than red light.
    • Since blue light scatters more than red light, it moves slower in dense materials like glass.
    • Why does blue light bend more than red light in glass?
    • When white light enters a prism, how does it exit as different colors?
    • Can you draw a similar picture for how light breaks up into a rainbow when passing through a water droplet?
    • What causes a `double' rainbow?
  3. Scattering
    • What is meant by Rayleigh scattering?
    • How does the scattering of light depend on the frequency?
    • Why is the sky blue?
  4. Interference
    • What is the interference pattern seen from light passing through a double-slit?
    • A thin film will reflect from both the top and the bottom surface, which creates a color interference.
