Review: Color I
The Spectrum
What are the wavelengths of visible light?
How do we describe light with wavelengths shorter (or longer) than visible light?
What is the color ordering in the visible spectrum?
Dispersion
What is the relation between the index of refraction and the speed of light?
Blue light has a higher frequency than red light. Since it oscillates faster, it is more likely to scatter than red light.
Since blue light scatters more than red light, it moves slower in dense materials like glass.
Why does blue light bend more than red light in glass?
When white light enters a prism, how does it exit as different colors?
Can you draw a similar picture for how light breaks up into a rainbow when passing through a water droplet?
What causes a `double' rainbow?
Scattering
What is meant by Rayleigh scattering?
How does the scattering of light depend on the frequency?
Why is the sky blue?
Interference
What is the interference pattern seen from light passing through a double-slit?
A thin film will reflect from both the top and the bottom surface, which creates a color interference.
