Graduate Visual Communications Courses

The School of Visual Communication offers a program of study leading to the Master of Arts in photography with a specialization in visual communication.

The M.A. requires at least 45 quarter hours of graduate coursework. Students can concentrate in either photographic communication (photojournalism, multi-media, and documentary) or photographic illustration (product, editorial, and/or architectural). Requirements include a thesis project or presentation (five hours), VICO 522, VICO 520, and electives. A portfolio review is held at the end of the first quarter of study.

Students wishing to study picture editing or newsroom graphics management may also apply to the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism.


Application

To apply, you must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and a grade-point average of at least 2.5. Admission is based on your academic and professional background. Submit completed application forms, the application fee, and two official transcripts from each postsecondary institution attended to the Office of Graduate Student Services, Ohio University, Wilson Hall, Athens OH 45701-2979. (International students from non-English-speaking countries are required to submit a TOEFL score.) You must also submit three letters of recommendation, a resume, and a portfolio of your work to the graduate program chair, School of Visual Communication, Ohio University, Seigfred Hall, Athens OH 45701-2979. The final date for application is March 1. Materials should be sent well in advance of the due date; only complete applications are considered.


Financial Aid

The school awards a limited number of teaching associateships and full-tuition scholarships. Selection is competitive and based upon openings and funding. You must maintain a 3.0 g.p.a to retain support. To be considered, mark the appropriate item on the application for graduate admission.
