The ORITE Safety and Human Factors Facility focuses on the relationship of the automobile driver to the road environment, especially in terms of improving traffic flow and driver safety and comfort as well understanding driver behaviors and impact of various Day/Night visibility demographics on driver performance. Research topics include traffic control devices, work zones, traffic signals, pavement markings, elderly mobility, and impaired drivers. The core research agenda for the facility is improved roadway and control design guidelines to accommodate a variety of driver skills and abilities ultimately leading to lower fatality rates along the nation’s highways.
